The growth of Blackpool as a holiday resort has depended to a large extent on improvements in transportation which allowed visitors greater accessibility to the town. In 1781 a Road was built making it possible for people to travel by stagecoach, but it could still be a time-consuming journey. The construction of railways in the middle of the nineteenth century enabled large numbers of people to come to Blackpool relatively cheaply and quickly. This resulted in a huge increase in visitors to the town. The following hundred years saw improvements in entertainment activities which also contributed to the popularity of Blackpool.
